1 July 2016 marks the start of the 2016 Tax Season for individuals. During tax season, individuals are required to submit their Income Tax Returns to SARS in order for SARS to calculate the tax due on the individual’s earnings for the 2016 financial year.
Important Dates
The important dates listing the deadlines for the 2016 individual filing submissions are:
- 23 September 2016 – Manual or postal submissions
- 25 November 2016 – Non-provisional taxpayers submitting via eFiling
- 31 January 2017 – Provisional taxpayers submitting via eFiling
It is important to adhere to SARS’ deadlines as late submissions may result in an administrative penalty levied on a monthly basis. When making use of a registered tax practitioner to calculate and submit your income tax return, you are guaranteed a timeous and accurate submission. In the case where your income tax return is selected for verification or audit, your tax practitioner will provide SARS with the requested documents as well as handle all queries on your behalf.
It is furthermore advisable to submit your income tax return well in advance of the submission dates listed above as any tax refunds due to you will only be payable by SARS after the submission of your income tax return.
